If a Jewish fisherman understood what his Rabbi showed him, then it shouldn't be hard for us, either. We just need his tools. Fortunately, God left them for us in the same place John found them: the Bible. This Primer uses the rest of the Bible to explain Revelation in plain language. We've banned the big words professors use. We've thrown out their multi-part sentences, and we don't waste time explaining why we disagree with somebody. Instead, we try to let the text speak for itself. When you read this Primer, you'll see that it was written for you with great respect for God's word. By the way, Revelation isn't that complicated. After all, it's the revealing of Jesus Christ.

Jesus will return within 40 years of the creation of the state of Israel in 1948! The Battle of Armageddon will come when the Soviet Union invades Israel over oil! Those newspaper mileposts passed and the Soviet Union fell. The faithful Christian has his faith shaken every time prophetic teaching based on the New York Times fails. Critics have a field day with each wrong interpretation. Then a new theory that fits the daily news better than the last one pops up. Each time, the sensational new speculation fails. Could it be that prophecy writers are listening to CNN more than to God? When a careful Christian reads a scholarly work, it can be about as interesting as reading the telephone book. Scholars do great research, but their books generally are written to other scholars, not to the rest of us. Isn't there a better choice? You're holding it. A Primer on the Book of Daniel is designed for you. It's written in your language, not the almost-foreign jargon of the scholar. At the same time, it's drawn from the work of scholars who have studied the Bible carefully for years. Their work has been assembled and translated so you can understand what the Bible says when it's allowed to interpret itself. Using plain language, Daniel gets to explain himself.

Book excerpt: "Though St. John the Evangelist saw many strange monsters in his vision, he saw no creature so wild as one of his own commentators." ~ G.K. Chesterton The book of Revelation was written to do just that: reveal. But most commentaries nowadays either engage in bizarre speculations about the future, or they keep an embarrassed distance from all the apocalyptic events that the apostle John says will “shortly take place.” In this commentary, Douglas Wilson provides a passage-by-passage walkthrough of the entire book, showing how John’s most notorious prophecies concern the Fall of Jerusalem in A.D. 70. Explaining symbols and characters as he goes, Wilson shows from the text that not only is this book not an elaborate code, but that Revelation is not even ultimately concerned with the end of the world as we know it. Revelation is about the triumph of the Church, which always happens when the Man comes around.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As the only book of its kind in the New Testament, Revelation can be difficult to understand, and for readers without specialized training, the historical-critical approach used in many commentaries can provide more complication than illumination. Here James Resseguie applies the easily understandable tools introduced in his primer on narrative criticism to this challenging book. He shows how Revelation uses such features as rhetoric, setting, character, point of view, plot, symbolism, style, and repertoire to construct its meaning. This literary approach draws out the theological and homiletical message of the book and highlights its major unifying themes: the need to listen well, an overwhelmingly God-centered perspective, and the exodus to a new promised land. Here is a valuable aid for pastor and serious lay reader alike.

Book excerpt: A COMBINED VERSION OF JOHN'S BOOK OF REVELATION ACCORDING TO JESUS' REVEALED TRANSLATION AND HIS HISTORICAL FULFILLMENT The creation of this third teaching manual for THE BOOK OF REVELATION is prompted by the sheer number of symbols that John uses to portray hisvision, which is at least 250 major symbols and many other minor symbols not included here. So even the most dedicated student of THE BOOK OF REVELATION becomes weary trying to remember what all of those symbols are designated to mean. So we are incredibly fortunate that Jesus, himself, interpreted the meanings of all those symbols for us in his two books that he transmitted through his medium at the beginning of the 20th century in1908, simplified here as THE REVEALED TRANSLATION and ITS HISTORICALFULFILLMENT. But that still doesn't reduce the sheer number of symbols to a workable size for us struggling humans to grasp. So what is most needed here is a simplified version that will isolate the most important symbols and weave them together in a logical narrative that even a newcomer to THE BOOK OF REVELATION can readily understand. So thatis what we have after we have reduced 250 symbols to 62 in this third teaching manual. Then if someone wants more detail, they areavailable in the two prior manuals. But what is most needed at this stage is a primer that covers the basic elements of THE BOOK OFREVELATION in the most easily understandable form. Therefore, passages from John's Revelation are quoted, then followed by their corresponding passages from Jesus' two revelations. Thereby, what we have created in this third teaching manual is a streamlined version that spells out in more understandable form the basic messages of THE BOOK OF REVELATION.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This three-part study covers the history of interpretation, theological foundations, and exegesis. Copious illustrations from the author's worldwide travels enhance discussion of Rome's emperors, empire, and ideology as the premier horizon for understanding John's immediate context and meaning. Distinctive contributions include Stevens's effort to re-canonize Revelation by insisting on gospel concord, methodically interpreting all of Revelation through the lens of the seven churches and showing how Revelation's imagery consistently relates more to the incarnation than the Parousia. Stevens bypasses traditional millennial options to argue that Revelation is passion-millennial--the passion of Jesus predicates the passion of the church. Under Stevens's hands, Revelation becomes eminently sensible to the original audience and powerfully pertinent for today's church.

With his outline from Genesis to Revelation the reader can visualize the unfolding drama of the Apocalypse and the triumphant return of Jesus Christ. Author Jerry Smith began to discover early in his thirty plus year tenure as a pastor that most people are confused instead of comforted by end-time and apocalyptic teachings. He has outlined for every layman and Bible student a simple "skeleton" and framework for understanding God's plan of the ages so that we don't have to be confused. Going from the original creation to the new creation he displays the different ages and dispensations and shows how they form a pattern to help us understand the greatest revelation of all - the return of Jesus Christ. Included are original charts drawn by the author and a concise commentary on the book of Revelation. Whether you hold to a certain millennial or rapture view or not, this material is designed to give you a framework to build your own viewpoint. It is recommended reading for every true believer in Jesus.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The harsh tone of the Greek text is inescapable. Most of our modern Bibles are translations based on the Greek New Testament. So when I began to read the New Testament from the Aramaic language, it was like re-reading the Bible for the first time. The text came alive in a different way, and the burning love of God toward us permeated through the text more than I had ever seen. While translating chapters 2 and 3 of John's Revelation, that this dichotomy became ever more apparent. The Jesus that is so often portrayed as harsh and even violent (Rev 2:23) is seen in a completely different light in the original Aramaic language. He is the same Jesus we read and experience in the Gospels; loving, tender, compassionate. It is with great joy and reverential awe of our Lord Jesus that I present to you the seven letters to the seven churches in the Book of Revelation from Aramaic, the language of Jesus. My hope is that as you meditate on these words, you would experience a cleansing from religiosity, "by the washing of water with the word" (Eph 5:26). May this short read catapult you into a deeper encounter with His love! Here are a few sample texts from this book: "I will come for your sake, immediately, and I will cause them to have an encounter with the sword of my mouth" (Revelation 2:16). "Behold! I will make them come and prostrate themselves before your feet, and they will know that I burn with love for you" (Revelation 3:9). "But you are lukewarm, and neither cold nor hot. Therefore I am preparing to be causing you to be restored by my mouth" (Revelation 3:16).
