Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this gripping narrative history, Lesley Hazleton tells the tragic story at the heart of the ongoing rivalry between the Sunni and Shia branches of Islam, a rift that dominates the news now more than ever. Even as Muhammad lay dying, the battle over who would take control of the new Islamic nation had begun, beginning a succession crisis marked by power grabs, assassination, political intrigue, and passionate faith. Soon Islam was embroiled in civil war, pitting its founder's controversial wife Aisha against his son-in-law Ali, and shattering Muhammad’s ideal of unity. Combining meticulous research with compelling storytelling, After the Prophet explores the volatile intersection of religion and politics, psychology and culture, and history and current events. It is an indispensable guide to the depth and power of the Shia–Sunni split.

Book excerpt: While the Prophet was returning from his last piligrimage to Medina, he received this revealation from Allah, at a place called Ghadir Khumm, commading the Prophet to read it to the people. O Prophet proclaim what has been revealed to you from your Lord, for if you do it not, you have not conveyed His message, and Allah will protect you from the (evil designs of) people, Surat Al Maida Chapter 5 V 67. Then the prophet told his People, the reason for this verse, is to Proclaim Ali as the Chaliphate after him. Immediately following the passing of the Prophet (SAW), his two Sahabat, and their fathers in law, turned against Ali. the home of Fatima, daughter of the Prophet was burned down by the sahabat, despite several narrations from the Prophet about Fatima, one of which is who ever upset Fatima, upset me and who ever upset me upset Allah. This book gives you summarized Ahadiths from Sunnis and Shias determining the Caliphate. It shows why the Caliphate belongs to Ali, and hid his decendant using Sunni Ahadiths to prove so. This book differentiates between the beliefs of the Shias and the Sunnis, and uses verses from the Holy Quran and from several Ahadith books.

—Seattle Times

Download or read book Islam in a Secular State PDF or another Format written by Walid Jumblatt Abdullah and published by Amsterdam University Press. This book was released on 2021-02-25 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The overtly secular state of Singapore has unapologetically maintained an authoritarian approach to governance in the realm of religion. Islam is particularly managed by the state. Muslim activists thus have to meticulously navigate these realities - in addition to being a minority community - in order to maximize their influence in the political system. Significantly, Muslim activists are not a monolith: there exists a multitude of political and theological differences amongst them. This study analyses the following categories of Muslim activists: Islamic religious scholars (ulama), liberal Muslims, and the more conservative-minded individuals. Due to constricting political realities, many activists attempt to align themselves with the state, and call upon the state to be an arbiter in their disagreements with other factions. Though there are activists who challenge the state, these are by far in the minority, and are typically unable to assert their influence in a sustained manner.
Download or read book Islam PDF or another Format written by Syed Farouq M. Al-Huseini and published by Trafford Publishing. This book was released on 2014-02 with total page 254 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Islam and the Glorious Ka'abah presents a unique guide that provides the background information about Islam since the time of Prophet Ibrahim (peace upon him). It begins at the time when he came to Makkah and left his wife, Hajar, and his baby son, Ismael. Years later he journeys back to Makkah to meet his son who by then had grown to be a young man, and built with him the Ka'aba, which became the center point for the Muslims around the world, and it provides the direction for their prayers and worshipping Allah in a unified way. Author Sayed / Farouq M. Al-Husseini offers a wide range of information about the religion of Islam, its teachings and fundamental beliefs, and the worshipping acts of its believers. He explains the holy book of Islam, the Qur'an, explaining how its revelations began and what it contains. Additionally, the text includes a summary of the life of the prophet of Islam, Mohammad (peace be upon him), from his birth and early years through his receiving of the revelations and, ultimately, his prophethood. It also covers his propagation of Islam in Makkah and migration to Al Madinah, where the cradle of Islam was established. Most importantly, this guide explores his personality, his sayings, and his deeds, which have been changing the world for fourteen centuries.
Download or read book The Making of Martyrdom in Modern Twelver Shi’ism PDF or another Format written by Adel Hashemi and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2022-02-24 with total page 224 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Twelver Shi'a Islam, the wait for the return of the Twelfth Imam, Muhammad ibn al-Hasan al-Mahdi, at the end of time, overshadowed the value of actively seeking martyrdom. However, what is the place of martyrdom in Twelver Shi'ism today? This book shows that the Islamic revolution in Iran resulted in the marriage of Shi'i messianism and extreme political activism, changing the mindset of the Shi'a worldwide. Suddenly, each drop of martyrs' blood brought the return of al-Mahdi one step closer, and the Islamic Republic of Iran supposedly became the prelude to the foretold world revolution of al-Mahdi. Adel Hashemi traces the unexplored area of Shi'i discourse on martyrdom from the 1979 revolution-when the Islamic Republic's leaders cultivated the culture of martyrdom to topple the Shah's regime-to the dramatic shift in the understanding of martyrdom today. Also included are the reaction to the Syrian crisis, the region's war with ISIS and other Salafi groups, and the renewed commitment to the defense of shrines. This book shows the striking shifts in the meaning of martyrdom in Shi'ism, revealing the real relevance of the concept to the present-day Muslim world.
Download or read book Homosexuality in Islam PDF or another Format written by Scott Siraj Al-Haqq Kugle and published by Simon and Schuster. This book was released on 2010-01-01 with total page 344 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Homosexuality is anathema to Islam – or so the majority of both believers and non-believers suppose. Throughout the Muslim world, it is met with hostility, where state punishments range from hefty fines to the death penalty. Likewise, numerous scholars and commentators maintain that the Qur’an and Hadith rule unambiguously against same-sex relations. This pioneering study argues that there is far more nuance to the matter than most believe. In its narrative of Lot, the Qur’an could be interpreted as condemning lust rather homosexuality. While some Hadith are fiercely critical of homosexuality, some are far more equivocal. This is the first book length treatment to offer a detailed analysis of how Islamic scripture, jurisprudence, and Hadith, can not only accommodate a sexually sensitive Islam, but actively endorse it.
Download or read book Beyond the Secular West PDF or another Format written by Akeel Bilgrami and published by Columbia University Press. This book was released on 2016-03-22 with total page 304 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What is the character of secularism in countries that were not pervaded by Christianity, such as China, India, and the nations of the Middle East? To what extent is the secular an imposition of colonial rule? How does secularism comport with local religious cultures in Africa, and how does it work with local forms of power and governance in Latin America? Has modern secularism evolved organically, or is it even necessary, and has it always meant progress? A vital extension of Charles Taylor's A Secular Age, in which he exhaustively chronicled the emergence of secularism in Latin Christendom, this anthology applies Taylor's findings to secularism's global migration. Abdullahi Ahmed An-Na'im, Rajeev Bhargava, Akeel Bilgrami, Souleymane Bachir Diagne, Sudipta Kaviraj, Claudio Lomnitz, Alfred Stepan, Charles Taylor, and Peter van der Veer each explore the transformation of Western secularism beyond Europe, and the collection closes with Taylor's response to each essay. What began as a modern reaction to—as well as a stubborn extension of—Latin Christendom has become a complex export shaped by the world's religious and political systems. Brilliantly alternating between intellectual and methodological approaches, this volume fosters a greater engagement with the phenomenon across disciplines.

This book was released on 2013-07-28 with total page 486 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the first full translation of Marino Sanudo Torsello's Secreta fidelium Crucis to be made into English. The work itself is a piece of crusading propaganda following the fall of Acre in 1291, written between 1300 and 1321, but it includes much of historical relevance along with interesting observations on the early history of Jerusalem and the Crusader Kingdom. The translation is based upon the text edited by Jacques Bongars in 1611. There is an introduction that contextualises the book, its author, his sources and his audience. The notes provide essential information to clarify internal textual references and allusions, as well as the role of Biblical references in Sanudo's grand design. The index is designed to make this detailed text usable and accessible. In this, his major work, Sanudo advocated the conquest of Egypt as the means to regain Jerusalem for the Latins and worked through his points with considerable detail alongside references to 13th-century Mediterranean history, especially involving Louis IX of France and Charles of Anjou, king of Naples. Books I and II give considerable detailed discussion of the concept, plan and costs of his proposed crusade. Book III provides an outline history of the crusades and the crusader states. It is derived from a wide-reading of other sources especially of William of Tyre, and, for events after 1184 on the Eracles, the letters of James of Vitry, and Sanudo's own experiences in the east. Throughout, the work contains a staggering amount of cartographical, ethnographical, geographical, and nautical information, as well as numerous unique insights into historical events and personalities of the late 13th century, not only in Outremer but in Western Europe.

Download or read book Human Rights Culture in Indonesia PDF or another Format written by Maksimus Regus and published by Walter de Gruyter GmbH & Co KG. This book was released on 2021-06-08 with total page 297 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Drawing on human rights discourse and a study of the difficulties faced by religious minority groups (using the Ahmadiyya minority group as a case study), this book presents three interconnected challenges to human rights culture in Indonesia. First, it presents a normative challenge, describing the gap between philosophical and normative principles of human rights on one side and the overall problems and critical issues of human rights at national and local levels on the other. Second, it considers the political problems in developing and strengthening human rights culture. The political challenge addresses the ability (or inability) of the state to guarantee the rights of certain individuals and minority groups. Third, it examines the sociological challenge of majority-minority group relationships in human rights discourse and practices. This book describes the background of human rights in Indonesia and reviews the previous literature on the issue. It also presents a comprehensive review of the discourses about human rights and political changes in contemporary Indonesia. The analysis focuses on how human rights challenges affect the situation of religious minorities, looking in particular at the Ahmadiyya as a minority group that experiences human rights violations such as discrimination, persecution, and violence. The study fills out its treatment of these issues by examining the involvement of actors both from the state and society, addressing also the politics of human rights protection.

This book was released on 2006 with total page 305 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Globalisation and modernisation are the buzzwords of the new millennium. They serve to sharpen the focus on the dynamic nature of political, economic and social systems and, in this book, the editor and contributors attempt to locate educational changes in a selected number of Muslim countries within the over-arching global scene. There has been considerable debate about the legitimacy of these terms and both have inspired definitions, nuances and accompanying emotions that run the whole gambit from welcoming acceptance to murderous aggressions. Terms like ancient, medieval or modern, when describing eras in the history of Europe, with the most recent one being referred to as post-modern, have been strongly debated. And, within the broad sweep of globalisation it is argued that there are identifiable stages, with many making for exclusive definitions, others inclusive.
