Book excerpt: The past few years have witnessed the emergence of steroid hormones as the wonder molecules which generate as much discussion in the scientific literature as they do in a typical living room. This transition has been a result of the tremendous public and scientific interest in the normal functioning of the hor mones as well their suggested involvement in several clinical conditions. In the recent past, notable scientific and technological advances have been made in the areas of contraception and regulation of fertility. Steroid receptors are the indis pensable mediators of hormonal responses and are complex protein molecules which appear to exist in association with other, yet undefined, proteins and/or factors. Receptors for vitamin D, retinoic acid and the thyroid hormones share structural similarities with steroid receptors, and the roster of this superfamily is still expanding. While our knowledge of the diversity and magnitude of steroid effects has advanced, the precise mode of steroid hormone action has alluded investigators. This volume brings together an international team of prominent investigators who discuss their most recent work on the basic and clinical aspects of steroid/nuclear receptors. The contributions represent updated versions of the invited presentations made at The Second Meadow Brook Conference on Steroid Receptors in Health and Disease. I am grateful to my colleagues on the Scientific Committee: Etienne Baulieu, Jack Gorski, Benita Katzenellenbogen, David Toft and James WittJiff, who provided the vision and guidance in formulating an out standing program.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Shapely Bodies: The Image of Porcelain in Eighteenth-Century France constructs the first cultural history of porcelain making in France. It takes its title from two types of “bodies” treated in this study: the craft of porcelain making shaped clods of earth into a clay body to produce high-end commodities and the French elite shaped human bodies into social subjects with the help of makeup, stylish patterns, and accessories. These practices crossed paths in the work of artisans, whose luxury objects reflected and also influenced the curves of fashion in the eighteenth century. French artisans began trials to reproduce fine Chinese porcelain in the 1660s. The challenge proved impossible until they found an essential ingredient, kaolin, in French soil in the 1760s. Shapely Bodies differs from other studies of French porcelain in that it does not begin in the 1760s at the Sèvres manufactory when it became technically possible to produce fine porcelain in France, but instead ends there. Without the secret of Chinese porcelain, artisans in France turned to radical forms of experimentation. Over the first half of the eighteenth century, they invented artificial alternatives to Chinese porcelain, decorated them with French style, and, with equal determination, shaped an identity for their new trade that distanced it from traditional guild-crafts and aligned it with scientific invention. The back story of porcelain making before kaolin provides a fascinating glimpse into the world of artisanal innovation and cultural mythmaking. To write artificial porcelain into a history of “real” porcelain dominated by China, Japan, and Meissen in Saxony, French porcelainiers learned to describe their new commodity in language that tapped into national pride and the mythic power of French savoir faire. Artificial porcelain cut such a fashionable image that by the mid-eighteenth century, Louis XV appropriated it for the glory of the crown. When the monarchy ended, revolutionaries reclaimed French porcelain, the fruit of a century of artisanal labor, for the Republic. Tracking how the porcelain arts were depicted in documents and visual arts during one hundred years of experimentation, Shapely Bodies reveals the politics behind the making of French porcelain’s image. In the Finite Element Analysis (FEA) the set of equations, describing the structural behaviour is then linear K d = F (1.1) In this matrix equation, K is the stiffness matrix of the structure, d is the nodal displacements vector and F is the external nodal force vector. Characteristics of linear problems is that the displacements are proportional to the loads, the stiffness of the structure is independent on the value of the load level. Though behaviour of real structures is nonlinear, e.g. displacements are not proportional to the loads; nonlinearities are usually unimportant and may be neglected in most practical problems.

However, it has only been in the past 40 years that the structure and function of psoralens have been elucidated. Although several volumes have been published on photobiology and photomedicine, no one volume has ever been devoted to the psoralen photobiology. In these two volumes we focus on the properties and uses of photoactivated psoralens. In these volumes the various aspects of psoralens are presented in a review of the field as it stands in mid 1986. In retrospect, we may find that this particular time was crucial in the development of new therapeutic modalities as many of the applications of modem molecular biology are beginning to impact on the practice of medicine. This book was written with two purposes in mind. First, to serve as an update (the last collective review of the field was in 1982). Second, it is hoped that newcomers to the fields of photobiology andphotomedicine both scientists and clinicians would find it a useful introduction.

Book excerpt: Bekah is a Ute Indian who was just a little girl when her cousin, Durano, left the tribe to live in Santa Fe to learn the language of the new people and the ways of the Americans and Spanish. Now he is an eighteen-year-old who is seemingly ready to accept his destiny, even though there is much about him that members of his tribe, including Bekah’s brother, both envy and hate. It is 1849 when seventeen-year-old Russian Jew, Benjamin Perlov, arrives in San Francisco, hoping to begin anew. As Durano steps into his role as Ute Indian chief, his life eventually intersects with that of Perlov who quickly becomes a friend of the Utes. As Perlov negotiates with the government so the Utes can remain on their ancestral lands instead of on new reservations created to ensure gold miners can stake their claims in Indian territory, fate leads him to Bekah’s arms and what he hopes is a future filled with love, hope, and new beginnings.
