Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The building of the Berlin Wall in 1961 shocked the world. Ever since, the image of this impenetrable barrier between East and West, imposed by communism, has been a central symbol of the Cold War. Based on vast research in untapped archival, oral, and private sources, Burned Bridge reveals the hidden origins of the Iron Curtain, presenting it in a startling new light. Historian Edith Sheffer's unprecedented, in-depth account focuses on Burned Bridge-the intersection between two sister cities, Sonneberg and Neustadt bei Coburg, Germany's largest divided population outside Berlin. Sheffer demonstrates that as Soviet and American forces occupied each city after the Second World War, townspeople who historically had much in common quickly formed opposing interests and identities. The border walled off irreconcilable realities: the differences of freedom and captivity, rich and poor, peace and bloodshed, and past and present. Sheffer describes how smuggling, kidnapping, rape, and killing in the early postwar years led citizens to demand greater border control on both sides--long before East Germany fortified its 1,393 kilometer border with West Germany. It was in fact the American military that built the first barriers at Burned Bridge, which preceded East Germany's borderland crackdown by many years. Indeed, Sheffer shows that the physical border between East and West was not simply imposed by Cold War superpowers, but was in some part an improvised outgrowth of an anxious postwar society. Ultimately, a wall of the mind shaped the wall on the ground. East and West Germans became part of, and helped perpetuate, the barriers that divided them. From the end of World War II through two decades of reunification, Sheffer traces divisions at Burned Bridge with sharp insight and compassion, presenting a stunning portrait of the Cold War on a human scale.

Book excerpt: In religious reforms, books and other forms of written communication play a dominant role, both for individuals as well as for groups. Covering the period from the late Middle Ages to the early seventeenth century, the chapters of this volume reflect on the use of books in religious reform movements and their impact on lay people and monastic communities. For those committed to religious renewal, books are the necessary and often enthusiastically welcomed vehicles for the transmission of religious reform concepts. They are at the same time often the objects of severe opposition and negative reactions in attempts at hindering or reversing religious reform for others. The researchers make use of approaches from cultural history, book history and English studies, among others. Contributions range from theory and practices of religious reform with special regard to the interaction between the laity and religious orders in their search for models of 'good religious living' to research on the changing processes of communication from manuscript to print and their impact on religious renewal.

Who are those who are willing to consecrate themselves, to pay the price, to have the dross of their flesh burned off by the power of the Holy Spirit? Who are those who are willing to buy gold refined by fire? The inheritance of the Son is the Bride, and the Father is resolute that His Son will see the reward of His suffering.

After witnessing her best friend, Melissa, be publicly humiliated, Lucy knew that was the last straw. Every man in the town—from Melissa’s cheating husband to the preacher—made their way to the saloon on a weekly basis. Town wives pretended they didn’t know what went on in the bedrooms on the second floor of the saloon, but Lucy knew better. As she danced with men on the dancefloor, she noticed who went upstairs. She knew what went on within those walls. Fed up with the double-standards, Lucy decides to put a plan in motion that would expose all of the sins and turmoil in Rock Springs. What Lucy didn’t know is that her plan would change her life forever. A woman’s maternal warmth and an unexpected encounter with a stranger pushed through the noise and allowed her to feel true love for the first time.

Then the fires came, followed by a knock on her door that would change everything she thought she knew about the world, herself, and her destiny. The Rucksack Universe series combines alternate history, speculative fiction, myth, adventure, globetrotting, and intrigue—all with well-poured pints of beer. Library Journal says Anthony St. Clair’s storytelling has “universe building reminiscent of Terry Pratchett,” and readers say they love the Rucksack Universe’s unique combination of “quirk, wit, travel, and magic.”
