Book excerpt: In Literary/Liberal Entanglements, Corrinne Harol and Mark Simpson bring together ten essays by scholars from a wide range of fields in English studies in order to interrogate the complex, entangled relationship between the history of literature and the history of liberalism. The volume has three goals: to investigate important episodes in the entanglement of literary history and liberalism; to analyze the impact of this entanglement on the secular and democratic projects of modernity; and thereby to reassess the dynamics of our neoliberal present. The volume is organized into a series of paired essays, with each pair investigating a concept central to both literature and liberalism: acting, socializing, discriminating, recounting, and culturing. Collectively, the essays demonstrate the vivid capacity of literary study writ large to reckon with, imagine, and materialize durative accounts of history and politics. Literary/Liberal Entanglements models a method of literary history for the twenty-first century.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What if the Renaissance had the right idea about character? Most readers today think that characters are individuals. Poets of the Renaissance understood characters as types. They thought the job of a character was to collect every example of a kind, in the same way that an entry in a dictionary collects definitions of a word. Character as Form celebrates the old meaning of character. The advantage of the old meaning is that it allows for generalization. Characters funnel whole societies of beings into shapes that are compact, elegant, and portable. This book tests the old meaning of character against modern examples from poems, novels, comics, and performances in theater and film by Shakespeare, Molière, Austen, the Marx Brothers, Raul Ruiz, Denton Welch, and Lynda Barry. The heart of the book is the character of the misanthrope, who, in Shakespeare's phrase, “banishes the world.”

Book excerpt: Maiden Voyage is Denton Welch’s debut novel, a frankly autobiographical account of a short period in his life when - at the age of 16 - he ran away from his English boarding school, before being sent back to Shanghai to live with his businessman father. “Trembling with sex”, is how Alan Bennett wonderfully describes Maiden Voyage; and as well as portraying so acutely the passions and nameless longings of a teenage boy, and the strange quirks and brutalities of public school life, it is also a novel that deals with the agony of childhood bereavement - the suffering of a boy who has only recently lost his mother. When Maiden Voyage was first published in 1943 it was an overnight sensation, and so graphic in its depiction of adolescence and the schooling system that Welch’s publisher - Herbert Read - was forced to seek legal advice. Seventy years on, there is little to shock the modern reader - but more than enough to earn a new generation of fans and admirers. William Burroughs said, “If ever there was a writer who was neglected, it was Denton. He makes you aware of the magic that is right beneath your eyes.”

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Alan Bennett contributes a perceptive and very personal Foreword to this new biography of the cult 1930s-40s writer and artist, Denton Welch. Welch's writing is like a glass of fine white wine, apparently innocuous and clear but very powerful. This most amazing writer, who died tragically at the age of thirty-three in 1948, is at once artless and incredibly precious. James Methuen-Campbell has researched his subject thoroughly, conducting countless interviews with those who knew Welch. For the first time Welch's work as an artist is also properly considered. The appendices include the first ever publication of the short pieces The Packing-case House and the Thief, The Big Field and Reading My First Review - In Spring. The biography includes a full bibliography of his writings and a catalogue of all known pictures and illustrations. The book also contains 61 plates, many in full colour, and a colour dustjacket. It will be limited to 500 copies.

But when one has nothing, that is the time when you realise what life is all about. I also wanted to show how people can turn against you if they know you have mental illness."" - Tahir Mahmood Malik DescriptionThis book is an autobiographical account of Tahir's breakdown and subsequent recovery with the help of the mental health services. Tahir suffered an awful breakdown in his marriage during which he was psychologicallly bullied and damaged. He turned to addiction to ease his worries but this only resulted in bankruptcy and panic attacks.Tahir has written this fantastic book to raise awareness of mental health issues, particularly in the Asian community. It is an honest account of the good and bad times in his life and argues that mental health sufferers should not be ashamed of their plight. This helpful, supportive and inspirational book proves that recovery is possible, particularly with the support of effective mental health services. About the AuthorI had everything, a happy marriage, financial security, a good job and reputation. But when I became ill, I lost all my income, was declared bankrupt, my marriage broke down and my family turned against me. I nearly died from pneumonia and was left on my own. That's were the mental health services helped me rediscover myself. I suffer from severe panic attacks, which resulted in me not able to go out on my own for a long time. I broke my hand three times due to those attacks and even attempted suicide; but I was saved by my mental health team. After the way my wife treated me I felt all alone in this world, but the mental health team have given me a reason to put back something into society. They made me feel welcomed and special. Being a Pakistani Muslim I feel it is important to get my message across, as lots of the younger generation out there have problems, and they need to know that there is help out there for them. As I have found, keeping it all in only results in failure and harm to yourself. I am one of the lucky few who, after all that has happened to me, have still found time to write this book. I may never be able to recapture the old me, but if my book helps anyone, that would give me a real sense of achievement. Tahir Mahmood MalikTahir recently won an UnLtd award and is now a social entrepreneur, he works hard to eliminate stigma and improve understanding of mental illnesses.
