Reading this collection will allow you to feel a multitude of emotions. While some poems focus on love and lust, others focus on despair and the feeling of being lost. While these poems are a close reflection of my own struggles and feelings, I hope that you can find the stories or emotions relatable.

For me, it is a strange sort of tugging, like all of me isn't really here, as if that missing piece is really somewhere else, engaging in the future that I hope to one day be part of. I know I am meant for something more. I can't really explain it, at least not in words, but I know there has to be more to life than what my eyes can see, than what my mind can understand. My heart tells me so. And aren't people always saying to follow your heart? It's a golden rule or something. Unfortunately, my life is still mostly normal. I'm the oldest of two children. My family is pretty wealthy, thanks to my dad's CEO position for his software company Cabbot Industries. Although he is an owner, he loves being hands-on and "part of the action." We don't have much to worry about in the way of finances, but we pay for it with Dad's constant absence. He's always away for work and business, typically halfway across the world. I trudge my way downstairs, fighting back the desire to rush back up to my room, jump in bed, and hide under the covers. I shake it off, telling myself, Less than five months of school left, Elle. You can do it. Stifling a yawn, I walk into the kitchen. Denney, my fifteen-year-old little brother, is sitting at the kitchen table, eating a bowl of cereal. He gives me a small smile in acknowledgment, showing a little too much of his breakfast. I turn to the breadbox on the bakers rack and pull out a bagel. After popping it into the toaster, I turn to get the cream cheese out of the fridge. All of the appliances in the kitchen are stainless steel and pretty much in spotless 10 E. K. Schiller and Holly Schiller condition. I make an effort to wipe my prints from the fridge's handle before grabbing a knife and plate, just in time for my bagel to pop back out. I can hear Dad in the living room, pacing around as he talks on the phone. He's home for the week, something that only happens about once every month to six weeks. Probably talking to some business associate or assistant, I think to myself. "If you could have one wish granted, no matter how big or small, what would it be? Would you wish for fame, riches, or to be president?" Denney babbles from behind his bowl of cereal which I note, with a little disdain, is his ever favorite Lucky Charms. I don't answer at first, just reach for my bagel, still nice and warm. I take it to the table then spread strawberry cream cheese all over it. Reaching for the comic section of the paper, which Dad has thoughtfully left there for me, I finally turn to look at my brother. "Why?" I ask. "Have you suddenly become a genie or something?" I find I'm a little dissatisfied by his wish choices; I can't imagine my life revolving around any of the three, at least not solely. "Just wanted to know," he mumbles, milk dribbling down his chin and back into the cereal bowl. He stands to take his bowl to the sink, wiping the milk from his face with the sleeve of his shirt. I shrug, shaking my head at him. He's a bit of a dork. But I guess that's typical. Denney's short for his age, almost as tall as I am, which is a not quite impressive five foot three inches. Most boys his age have hit a growth spurt, shooting them well past me in height; I am waiting for Denney to hit his soon. He has my dishwater blond hair, a few shades lighter than Mom's nut brown. And his eyes are a soft hazel color, a mix of browns and greens. I turn back to my bagel and comics as I see Mom walking into the kitchen in her flowery robe, the one Dad thought would be a great Mother's Day present a few years ago. Funny how she only wears it when Dad's home from business. She and Dad have been together since high school. They both graduated from Stillton Hig

Book excerpt: He was the Wicked Wilson Pickett, the legendary soul man whose forty-plus hits included "In the Midnight Hour," "634-5789," "Land of 1000 Dances," "Mustang Sally," and "Don't Let the Green Grass Fool You." Remarkably handsome and with the charisma to match, Wilson Pickett was considered by many to be the greatest, the most visceral and sensual of the classic 1960s soul singers, and as a man who turned screaming into an art form, the most forceful of them all. He was the living embodiment of soul. More than that, Wilson Pickett's journey reads like a guide to popular black American music in the late 20th century. From the gospel-rich cotton fields of Alabama to the pre-Motown metropolis of Detroit, and throughout his career at Atlantic Records--he was the first artist on that label to record at Stax in Memphis, Fame in Muscle Shoals, and Sigma in Philadelphia, and rehabilitated an exiled Bobby Womack and introduced Duane Allman along the way--Wilson Pickett led the shifts in Rhythm and Blues and soul music. Pickett's downfall, precipitated by the move towards softer soul and then disco in the 1970s, proved equally dramatic, leading to a heavy alcohol and drug addiction, a reputation for violence and gun use, a no-show for his induction into the Rock 'n' Roll Hall of Fame in 1991, and two jail terms later in the decade. Nonetheless, the "Wicked" Pickett climbed out of these depths to end his career with a Grammy-nominated album before his death in 2006. For this first-ever accounting of Wilson Pickett's life, bestselling biographer Tony Fletcher interviewed members of the singer's family, friends and partners, along with dozens of his studio and touring musicians. Offering equal attention to Pickett's personal and professional life, with detailed insight into his legendary studio sessions and his combative road style, In the Midnight Hour: The Life and Soul of Wilson Pickett is the essential telling of an epic life.

"What's new?" and "What's the point?" This book creatively uses the Book of Ecclesiastes--where these questions often pop up--to investigate how we question, what we question, and why we question. Along the way you will encounter some of history's great questioners: Socrates, Soren Kierkegaard, Virginia Woolf, Friedrich Nietzsche, G. K. Chesterton, and others, though they may appear in unexpected ways. Something Beyond Nothing? is an experiment in finding and making meaning that focuses on the unpredictable journey of living with questions. Taking the awkwardness of Ecclesiastes as a cue, Brian Niece's odd book is a mix of storytelling, theological analysis, poetic meditation, philosophical investigation, drama, and biblical interpretation. Herein is nonfiction and fiction--with no clear line between the two--suggesting that our modes of meaning may be as significant as the meaning they lead us to. What's more, if there is something beyond nothing, it may not be quite like what we think we know. And the God we don't yet know may surprise us.

Loeb proposes a fresh account of the relation between the book's literary and philosophical aspects and argues that the book's narrative is designed to embody and exhibit the truth of eternal recurrence. Loeb shows how Nietzsche constructed a unified and complete plot in which the protagonist dies, experiences a deathbed revelation of his endlessly repeating life, and then returns to his identical life so as to recollect this revelation and gain a power over time that advances him beyond the human. Through close textual analysis and careful attention to Nietzsche's use of Platonic, biblical, and Wagnerian themes, Loeb explains how this novel design is the key to solving the many riddles of Thus Spoke Zarathustra - including its controversial fourth part, its obscure concept of the Übermensch, and its relation to Nietzsche's Genealogy of Morals.

Book excerpt: 'When we know how to enter deeply into the realm of the soul, we reach understanding of the harmony that exists between successive lives on earth and the whole of the physical world outside us.' - Rudolf Steiner. In these eight lectures, given during the Great War as thousands of young men were being killed in battle, Rudolf Steiner - the great initiate of the twentieth century - describes the dramatic reality of the spiritual worlds encountered by human beings after death. He speaks of the joys and sufferings experienced in those worlds by people of different character; the vision of the 'ideal human being' that souls experience; the cosmic 'midnight hour'; the processes leading to rebirth in the world of the senses; the deeper causes behind such phenomena as materialism and criminality; and why, in the flesh, we lose our instinctive perception of the spiritual worlds. Steiner describes how knowledge of the spiritual realms, as well as the life beyond death and before birth, can be built on the foundations of modern science. Indeed, he speaks of mankind's involvement in science and its many achievements as necessary steps on the path towards a modern spirituality and true understanding of the soul, and describes in detail some of the methods by which direct perception of the worlds of soul and spirit can be developed.

It is abaout the deeper meaning of the fifty-two weekly verses, which has remained essentially unexplored in the last hundred years since the first edition by Rudolf Steiner. A dense veil of Isis was spread over them, of which is well known that no mortal person can lift it. Only the immortal, psycho-spiritual human being, who knows himself at home in the extrasensory, higher worlds, is capable of doing this. Only to him the weekly verses reveal themselves as a travel guide through these worlds and lift him up to ever higher spiritual-cosmic realms until he reaches the experience of God, from where he gradually descends again into a new life on Earth, enriched in spirit and fertilized in his soul. If the reader embarks on this journey, the spiritual archetype of the Soul Calendar is ultimately unveiled to him and he achieves an extended understanding of Man and Christ. By many quotations from Rudolf Steiner's lectures and books, the author virtually lets Steiners himself elucidate the breathtaking depths of his mysterious weekly verses.
