ABOUT THE BOOK Pretty Little Liars centers around four teenage friends from an upscale small town in Pennsylvania, who are reunited after another friend disappears. The show debuted on ABC Family TV network on January 23, 2011 with a run of ten episodes. The idea for the series, however, began years before, when the producers at Alloy Entertainment, the company behind The Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants and the Gossip Girl series, first conceived of a book they described as Desperate Housewives for teens. To write the series, they hired author Sara Shepard, who grew up in a town much like Rosewood, Pa., where the Pretty Little Liars book series and television series takes place. They wanted to come up with something for her, Farrin Jacobs, an editor at HarperTeen books, told Publishers Weekly. It was a case of the right writer and the right idea at the right time. The first book in the series debuted in 2005 and proved popular. By 2012, the series had expanded to include Flawless, Perfect, Unbelievable, Wicked, Killer, Heartless, Wanted, Twisted, Ruthless, and Stunning. Shepard plans to write 12 books in all. Its a careful dance between giving readers something with each book, but also keeping them wanting to find out what happens next, said Jacobs of the books. They love the guessing game. MEET THE AUTHOR Claire Shefchik, a native of Minnesota, received an MFA in creative writing from Sarah Lawrence College. Her writing on arts and entertainment has appeared on USAToday.com, Spinner, The Faster Times, and many blogs. She can be found on Facebook and on Twitter @clairels. EXCERPT FROM THE BOOK Just like Alison, A seems to know all their secrets. Aria, an artsy girl who has just come back from a year in Iceland, has begun a relationship with her new English teacher, Ezra (aka Mr. Fitz). Emily, a top swimmer from a military family, has developed romantic feelings for a female friend, Maya St. Germain. Spencer, an intelligent overachiever, is fooling around with her sisters fiance. And Hanna, now the school It girl and best friends with formerly nerdy Mona Vanderwall, is a shoplifter and still insecure about the weight she had to lose to become popular. But most of all, the girls are worried about As knowledge of what they refer to as The Jenna Thing. Alison, with the girls help, made a plan to retaliate against Toby Cavanaugh, a neighborhood boy whom Alison had accused of spying on the girls. She sets fire to his house, but ends up blinding his stepsister, Jenna Marshall. Toby is blamed for the fire and sent away to reform school for a year. Now, however, both siblings are back in Rosewood and attending school... Buy a copy to keep reading! Download or read book The History of Trans Representation in American Television and Film Genres PDF or another Format written by Traci B. Abbott and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2022 with total page 298 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Due to the increase in transgender characters in scripted television and film in the 2010s, trans visibility has been presented as a relatively new phenomenon that has positively shifted the cis societys acceptance of the trans community. This book counters this claim to assert that such representations actually present limited and harmful characterizations, as they have for decades. To do so, this book analyzes transgender narratives in scripted visual media from the 1960s to 2010s across a variety of genres, including independent and mainstream films and television dramatic series and sitcoms, judging not the veracity of such representations per se but dissecting their transphobia as a constant despite relevant shifts that have improved their veracity and variety. Already ingrained with their own ideological expectations, genres shift the framing of the trans character, particularly the relevance of their gender difference for cisgender characters and society. The popularity of trans characters within certain genres also provides a historical lineage that is examined against the progression of transgender rights activism and corresponding transphobic falsehoods, concluding that this popular medium continues to offer a limited and narrow conception of gender, the variability of the transgender experience, and the range of transgender identities.

Who knew donut-making could turn out to be such dangerous business. Killer Crullers Soon after a stranger tosses a whole box of crullers at Suzanne's friend Gabby's storefront, claiming that stolen family valuables ended up in her thrift store, he turns up dead right in front of the donut shop. Book excerpt: In 1936, as television networks CBS, DuMont, and NBC experimented with new ways to provide entertainment, NBC deviated from the traditional method of single experimental programs to broadcast the first multi-part program, Love Nest, over a three-episode arc. This would come to be known as a miniseries. Although the term was not coined until 1954, several other such miniseries were broadcast, including Jack and the Beanstalk and Women in Wartime. In the mid-1960s the concept was developed into a genre that still exists. While the major broadcast networks pioneered the idea, it quickly became popular with cable and streaming services. This encyclopedic source contains a detailed history of 878 TV miniseries broadcast from 1936 to 2020, complete with casts, networks, credits, episode count and detailed plot information.

This book was released on 2018-03-20 with total page 311 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Discussions of gender and sexuality have become part of mainstream conversations and are being reflected in the work of more and more writers of fiction, particularly in literature aimed at young adult audiences. But young readers, regardless of their sexual orientation, don’t always know what books offer well-rounded portrayals of queer characters and situations. Fortunately, finding positive role models in fiction that features LGBTQ+ themes has become less problematic, though not without its challenges. In Representing the Rainbow in Young Adult Literature: LGBTQ+ Content since 1969, Christine Jenkins and Michael Cart provide an overview of the literary landscape. An expanded version of The Heart Has Its Reasons, this volume charts the evolution of YA literature that features characters and themes which resonate not only with LGBTQ+ readers but with their allies as well. In this resource, Jenkins and Cart identify titles that are notable either for their excellence—accurate, thoughtful, and tactful depictions—or deficiencies—books that are wrongheaded, stereotypical, or outdated. Each chapter has been significantly updated, and this edition also includes new chapters on bisexual, transgender, and intersex issues and characters, as well as chapters on comics, graphic novels, and works of nonfiction. This book also features an annotated bibliography and a number of author-title lists of books discussed in the text that will aid teachers, librarians, parents, and teen readers. Encompassing a wider array of sexual identities, Representing the Rainbow in Young Adult Literature is an invaluable resource for young people eager to read about books relevant to them and their lives.
Download or read book Perspectives on Crazy Ex-Girlfriend PDF or another Format written by Amanda Konkle and published by Syracuse University Press. This book was released on 2021-09-22 with total page 324 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: With an off-putting title and a decidedly retrograde premise, the CW dramedy Crazy Ex-Girlfriend is a surprising choice for critical analysis. But, loyal viewers quickly came to appreciate the show’s sharp cultural critique through masterful parody, and this strategy has made it a critical darling and earned it several awards throughout its run. In ways not often seen on traditional network television, the show transcends conventional genre boundaries—the Hollywood musical, the romantic comedy, the music video—while resisting stereotypes associated with contemporary life. The essays in this collection underscore the show’s ability to distinguish itself within the current television market. Focusing on themes of feminism, gender identity, and mental health, contributors explore the ways in which the show challenged viewer expectations, as well as the role television critics play in identifying a show’s "authenticity" or quality.
