Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Reading a translation of any book is just not the same as reading it in its original language and is adequately stated in the phrase "lost in the translation." When-ever a text is translated from one language to another it loses some of its flavor and substance. The problem is compounded by the fact that a language is tied to the culture that uses that language. When the text is read by a culture different from the one it is written in, it loses its cultural context. A Biblical example of this can be found in the Hebrew word tsur which is translated as a rock - "He only is my rock and my salvation, he is my defence; I shall not be greatly moved" (Psalm 62:2, KJV). What is a rock and how does it apply to God? To us it may mean solid, heavy or hard but the cultural meaning of the word tsur is a high place in the rocks where one runs to for refuge and defense, a place of salvation. "The Living Words" is an in-depth study into the Ancient Hebrew vocabulary and culture of the Bible replacing the flavor and substance that has been removed from us.

They may be overly familiar with the text to the point of finding it predictable, or they may be disillusioned with the church. Too often, and for a variety of reasons, believers make the Bible an idol and unwittingly turn the Word into stone. Author and pastor Debbie Blue helps readers discover how to turn the stone back into living Word. She first gives general guidelines for letting the Bible breathe, then looks at the Bible's main themes as dynamically encouraging and challenging. Blue frees believers from dumbed-down spirituality as she reveals that the Word is alive and thrilling.

Book excerpt: Effective, significant preaching requires a vision and a pondering of the question, How can I do what the Church expects of me?" The homily offers preachers a chance to live this question. Drawing from official Roman Catholic documents (1963-1995), Written Text Becomes Living Word summarizes this Vision for the homily as having five characteristics: personal, liturgical, inculturating, clarifying, and actualizing. DeLeers integrates and develops homiletic practice into this Vision by a detailed process for effective preparation and preaching. Written from the author's work with preachers, Written Text Becomes Living Word will help re-inspire the homiletic Vision as well as the spiritual life of those preaching. Chapters are: *Repairing the 'Accidents of History': Roman Catholic Restoration and Embrace of the Sunday Homily, - *The Evolution of the 'Restored' Homily,1963-93, - *A Roman Catholic Contribution to the Vision of Sunday Preaching, - *The Homily as Personal Word: Responsibility, Faith, and Love, - *The Homily as Liturgical Word: The Assembly and Its Sacred Ritual, - *The Homily as Inculturated Word: Correlating Experience and Tradition, - *The Homily as Clarifying Word: One Good Point, Clearly Made, - *The Homily as Actualizing Word: Written Text Becomes Living Word, - *Arriving at the Sunday Message: Three Necessary Encounters with the Word, - *From Message to Homily: Content, Structure, and Delivery, - *Ten Suggestions for Becoming a Better Preacher, - and an Appendix: Roman Catholic Documents on the Homily.
