Book excerpt: During the 1930s in the United States, the Works Progress Administration developed the Federal Writers’ Project to support writers and artists while making a national effort to document the country’s shared history and culture. The American Guide series consists of individual guides to each of the states. Little-known authors—many of whom would later become celebrated literary figures—were commissioned to write these important books. John Steinbeck, Saul Bellow, Zora Neale Hurston, and Ralph Ellison are among the more than 6,000 writers, editors, historians, and researchers who documented this celebration of local histories. Photographs, drawings, driving tours, detailed descriptions of towns, and rich cultural details exhibit each state’s unique flavor. The Granite State has a rich history and varied landscape, beautifully presented in the WPA Guide to New Hampshire. The driving tours highlight the White Mountains, Lake Winnipesaukee, and the coast near Portsmouth. This New Hampshire guide also has traditional photographs of churches, landscapes, and colonial houses which give readers a feel for life in New England in the early 20th century.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: One of the jobs programs launched by the Roosevelt administration during the Great Depression was the Federal Writers Project. What resulted was the American Guides series, one travel guide for each State, directing people on what routes to take and what to see, but also revealing the distinctive characteristics of individual states. One aspect of the Guides was the Literature Essays, which discussed nearly 3000 authors in all. Griswold focuses on the literary impact, revealing how diversified American literature s cast of characters was (by gender, ethnicity, geography) and how the State Guides introduced a shift in perception of American culture (it now seemed to come in state-shaped boxes). She tells us what the Guides looked (impressively produced) and how they told a story of each state s natural, social, and cultural heritage, its cities, and how motorists should see it. This was a time (1930s) when literacy in American was high and there was a boom in reading. These books were retained in libraries, they were continually reprinted and used by students, hence the State Guides normalized ideas about cultural diversity long before such ideas became mainstream. American Guides is the second volume of a trilogy on culture and place by Griswold (the first was Regionalism and the Reading Class, 2008)."

This book was released on 2002 with total page 1770 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Incorporating more than 3,000 illustrations, Kornwolf's work conveys the full range of the colonial encounter with the continent's geography, from the high forms of architecture through formal landscape design and town planning. From these pages emerge the fine arts of environmental design, an understanding of the political and economic events that helped to determine settlement in North America, an appreciation of the various architectural and landscape forms that the settlers created, and an awareness of the diversity of the continent's geography and its peoples. Considering the humblest buildings along with the mansions of the wealthy and powerful, public buildings, forts, and churches, Kornwolf captures the true dynamism and diversity of colonial communities - their rivalries and frictions, their outlooks and attitudes - as they extended their hold on the land.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Of the several entrances to the White Mountains, none is more majestic than the Franconia Gateway. The gateway begins in the valley of the Pemigewasset River and reaches through broad meadows, between jagged mountains, alongside quiet pools and cascades of sparkling water, into the wilderness of Franconia Notch and beyond. Altogether, this region contains more historical secrets and hidden treasures than any other part of the White Mountains. The Franconia Gateway opens the way from a new perspective. With nearly one hundred fifty breathtaking views and fascinating stories, this history and guide leads from lore of the Native Americans, explorers, and early entrepreneurs to the logging boom years and the subsequent preservation era on to the days of the artists and poets and, ultimately, the tourists. The journey progresses through the communities of Plymouth, Campton, Thornton, Waterville Valley, Woodstock, and Franconia, and includes all the wonder and mystery of sites such as the Lost River, the Flume, and the Old Man of the Mountain.
