But Scotland Yard Superintendent Richard Jury has other ideas, and before long he’s following his keen police instincts all the way to Santa Fe, New Mexico. There, in the company of a brooding thirteen-year-old girl and her pet coyote, he mingles with an odd assortment of characters and tangles with a twisted plot that stretches from England to the American Southwest. And while his good friend Melrose Plant pursues inquires in London, Jury delves deeper into the more baffling elements of the case, discovering firsthand what the guide books don’t tell you; that the Land of Enchantment is also a landscape ripe with tragedy, treachery, and murder.

Book excerpt: By the time Route 66 received its official numerical designation in 1926, picture postcards had become popular travel souvenirs. At the time, these postcards with colorful images served as advertisements for roadside businesses. While cherished by collectors, these postcard depictions do not always reflect reality. They often present instead a view enhanced for promotional purposes. Portrait of Route 66 lets us see for the first time the actual photographs from which the postcards were made, and in describing how the production process worked, introduces us to an extraordinary archival collection, adding new history to this iconic road. The Curt Teich Postcard Archives, held at the Lake County Discovery Museum in Wauconda, Illinois, contains one of the nation’s largest collections of Route 66 images, including thousands of job files for postcards produced by Curt Teich and Company of Chicago. T. Lindsay Baker combed these files to choose the best examples of postcards and their accompanying photographs not only to reflect well-known sites along the route but also to demonstrate the relationships between photographs and their resulting postcards. The photographs show the reality of the locations that customers sometimes wanted "improved" for aesthetic purposes in creating the postcards. Such alterations included removing utility poles or automobile traffic and rendering overcast skies partly cloudy. This book will interest historians of art and design as well as the worldwide audiences of Route 66 aficionados and postcard collectors. For its mining of an invaluable and little-known photographic archive and depiction of high-quality photographs that have not been seen before, Portrait of Route 66 will be irresistible to all who are interested in American history and culture.

Book excerpt: "Raised by a brutally stern, religious father in a small Southern town, Robbie Taylor arrives in New York City in 1978 as an optimistic, romantic, young man with a circle of new friends and begins a personal odyssey into enlightenment as he navigates through the hedonism of his youth." "At the heart of Robbie's new life in New York are his lovers and friends: Denise, a lesbian artist who yearns to understand and experience motherhood; Vince, a playwright who shepherds Robbie into gay culture and, eventually, activism; Jeff, a too-handsome actor with an enigmatic spiritual quest; and Nathan, who becomes Robbie's lover just as the AIDS epidemic becomes the epicenter of their world. Robbie's losses mount, the world around him is ravaged and his faith is continually tested like a modern-day Job. Virtually defeated, he leaves Manhattan for Los Angeles where he attempts to repair his shattered life and where he hopes to find solace from his haunted yearnings."--BOOK JACKET.Title Summary field provided by Blackwell North America, Inc. This book was released on 2018-09-10 with total page 305 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since the late twentieth century, letters in literature have seen a remarkable renaissance. The prominence of letters in recent fiction is due in part to the rediscovery, by contemporary writers, of letters as an effective tool for rendering aspects of historicity, liminality, marginalization and the expression of subjectivity vis-à-vis an ‘other’; it is also due, however, to the artistically challenging inclusion of the new electronic media of communication into fiction. While studies of epistolary fiction have so far concentrated on the eighteenth century and on thematic concerns, this volume charts the epistolary renaissance in recent literature, entering new territory by also focusing on the aesthetic implications of the epistolary mode. In particular, the essays in this volume illuminate the potential of the epistolary (including digital forms) for rendering contemporary sensitivities. The volume thus offers a comprehensive assessment of letter narratives in contemporary literature. Through its focus on the aesthetic and structural aspects of new epistolary fiction, the inclusion of various narrative forms, and the consideration of both conventional letters and their new digital kindred, The Epistolary Renaissance offers novel insight into a multi-facetted (re)new(ed) genre.

Book excerpt: In my opinion, unless you're a total introvert, agoraphobic, disabled or too lazy to leave the house, your best bet to buy most things you need is locally. Go to the Yellow Pages, read your local newspapers, drive around the shopping areas, go to local free ad websites and talk to people you know about what you need. I generally buy most of my stuff from the big department stores but if I need something like furniture, I'll check out the furniture stores on the poor side of the town because the prices for the same goods are often much cheaper than a store in the higher class part of town plus you can often haggle with the owner on a cash deal. By shopping on the poor side of town at supermarkets for food, you can often save several dollars on a load of groceries. Beyond that, I generally go to the thrift stores a few times a year to buy t-shirts, clothes and anything else that strikes my fancy as I look around.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A survey of all aspects of design that establishes the 1970s as a vitally important period in the creative arts. Once dismissed as the decade of foil wallpaper and shag rugs, the 1970s are now being enthusiastically mined for trends from the fashion, music, and literature of the time. The period, which united elements of earlier movements such as Art Deco and Pop, continues to influence today’s tastemakers. From artist Duggie Fields’s apartment to album covers of New Wavers like the B-52s and glam rock’s David Bowie, from the slick advertising of Italian fashion house Fiorucci to such seminal book covers as Germaine Greer’s The Female Eunuch, the authors have gone beyond the usual discussion of flares and platform shoes to address the design aesthetic of the decade as a whole. Architecture and design collectives of the time, including UK-based Archigram and the avant-garde Italian group Studio Alchimia, are also recognized as important contributors to the look and style of the decade. 70s Style is sure to inspire everyone from dedicated followers of fashion to even the harshest critics of the decade. Hislop and Lutyens have rescued the 1970s from parody and have produced a study that is meticulously researched and sensationally illustrated.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Rainbow's End tells the story of the stock market collapse in a colorful, swift-moving narrative that blends a vivid portrait of the 1920s with an intensely gripping account of Wall Street's greatest catastrophe. The book offers a vibrant picture of a world full of plungers, powerful bankers, corporate titans, millionaire brokers, and buoyantly optimistic stock market bulls. We meet Sunshine Charley Mitchell, head of the National City Bank, powerful financiers Jack Morgan and Jacob Schiff, Wall Street manipulators such as the legendary Jesse Livermore, and the lavish-living Billy Durant, founder of General Motors. As Klein follows the careers of these men, he shows us how the financial house of cards gradually grew taller, as the irrational exuberance of an earlier age gripped America and convinced us that the market would continue to rise forever. Then, in October 1929, came a "perfect storm"-like convergence of factors that shook Wall Street to its foundations. We relive Black Thursday, when police lined Wall Street, brokers grew hysterical, customers "bellowed like lunatics," and the ticker tape fell hours behind. This compelling history of the Crash--the first to follow the market closely for the two years leading up to the disaster--illuminates a major turning point in our history.
