Weakness, injuries, sickness, impurities—these are the effects of sin. Through the blood of Christ, the believer experiences cleansing, healing, purifying—mankind's miracle. This book is a collection of Spurgeon's teachings on the power of Christ's blood, which can be applied to the believer's life in much the same way as the Passover blood protected the Israelites. He teaches how the blood of Christ provides salvation, forgiveness, redemption, healing, power to overcome temptation, and even unity in the church when the evil one tries to divide us.

Book excerpt: It is fair to say that Charles Haddon Spurgeon is one of the best-known preachers in the history of the world. It is definite that he was England's best-known preacher for the second half of the 19th century. He took Christ as his Lord and Saviour in 1850 and just four years later was called to be the pastor of London's famed New Park Street Church. It was under his pastoral care that this Church outgrew its building and had to move to new premises. This new site gave rise to a new name, one that is renowned even today, the Metropolitan Tabernacle. We are delighted to present to you Spurgeon's sermons in this new series of publications. This book is the collection of 24 of C.H. Spurgeon's sermons, faithfully recorded and edited for publication. The subject of these sermons is the most important matter of the Holy Spirit. These sermons form Spurgeon's teaching on the Blood of the Lord Jesus Christ. This theme is without doubt foundation to the Christian faith. It is our hope and prayer that these sermons will bless you just as they did those who listened to the 'Prince of Preachers' over a century ago. This is still a treasure of wisdom and encouragement for the 21st century. Each work is beautifully formatted with every verse given an uncluttered presentation for ease of reference and use. As a beneficiary of the Puritan tradition of preachingthe last of the PuritansSpurgeon set a high standard for preaching from the sacred scriptures by focusing on a specific text for the congregation to understand; he would explain the main words and parts of the text, persuasively proclaiming the gospel message of the text. Portraits of the Great I AM provides a window into the practical applications and principles Spurgeon applied in his seven great I AM sermons based on the gospel of John. According to Spurgeon, believers who dwell on Christthe Great I AMwill obtain the best apprehensions of the Father through the Son. Jesus said (to Philip): He who has seen Me has seen the Father (John 14:9 NKJV). Author and historian Ernest LeVos has carefully edited and presented Spurgeons seven portraits of Christwho said I am the bread of life, the light of the world, the door, the good shepherd, the resurrection, the way, truth, and life, and the vineand these portraits can be used as a devotional for morning and evening personal worship. Spurgeons seven great I AM sermons can help believers be blessed, and they can offer a time for reflection and meditation on the life and the walk of faith. Rejoice that the Father gave us the inspired scriptures to read about and consider, by faith, Gods beloved Son.

Book excerpt: Charles Haddon Spurgeon (1834-1892) was the most famous Baptist minister of his generation. For such a significant figure, he has received surprisingly little scholarly coverage. This present work seeks to make a contribution to Spurgeon studies by examining him through the lens of his "spirituality." A wealth of primary material, much of it previously untapped, is used to build up a picture of his spiritual life. Whereas older and more recent interpretations of Spurgeon have a tendency to be one-dimensional, examination of his spirituality reveals him to be a complex figure, one who was molded by a diverse range of factors. Despite this complexity, a unifying theme for Spurgeon's spirituality is traced and fresh light is shed on the foremost popular preacher of the Victorian age.

Book excerpt: Volume 15 Sermons 848-907 Charles Spurgeon (19 June 1834 – 31 January 1892) is one of the church’s most famous preachers and Christianity’s foremost prolific writers. Called the “Prince of Preachers,” he was one of England's most notable ministers for most of the second half of the nineteenth century, and he still remains highly influential among Christians of different denominations today. His sermons have spread all over the world, and his many printed works have been cherished classics for decades. In his lifetime, Spurgeon preached to more than 10 million people, often up to ten times each week. He was the pastor of the congregation of the New Park Street Chapel (later the Metropolitan Tabernacle) in London for 38 years. He was an inexhaustible author of various kinds of works including sermons, commentaries, an autobiography, as well as books on prayer, devotionals, magazines, poetry, hymns and more. Spurgeon was known to produce powerful sermons of penetrating thought and divine inspiration, and his oratory and writing skills held his audiences spellbound. Many Christians have discovered Spurgeon's messages to be among the best in Christian literature. Edward Walford wrote in Old and New London: Volume 6 (1878) quoting an article from the Times regarding one of Spurgeon’s meetings at Surrey: “Fancy a congregation consisting of 10,000 souls, streaming into the hall, mounting the galleries, humming, buzzing, and swarming—a mighty hive of bees—eager to secure at first the best places, and, at last, any place at all. After waiting more than half an hour—for if you wish to have a seat you must be there at least that space of time in advance—Mr. Spurgeon ascended his tribune. To the hum, and rush, and trampling of men, succeeded a low, concentrated thrill and murmur of devotion, which seemed to run at once, like an electric current, through the breast of every one present, and by this magnetic chain the preacher held us fast bound for about two hours. It is not my purpose to give a summary of his discourse. It is enough to say of his voice, that its power and volume are sufficient to reach every one in that vast assembly; of his language, that it is neither high-flown nor homely; of his style, that it is at times familiar, at times declamatory, but always happy, and often eloquent; of his doctrine, that neither the 'Calvinist' nor the 'Baptist' appears in the forefront of the battle which is waged by Mr. Spurgeon with relentless animosity, and with Gospel weapons, against irreligion, cant, hypocrisy, pride, and those secret bosom-sins which so easily beset a man in daily life; and to sum up all in a word, it is enough to say of the man himself, that he impresses you with a perfect conviction of his sincerity.” More than a hundred years after his death, Charles Spurgeon’s legacy continues to effectively inspire the church around the world. For this reason, Delmarva Publications has chosen to republish the complete works of Charles Spurgeon.
