Book excerpt: This landmark work is the first academic study of a figure who played a defining role in the Australian evangelical movement of the late twentieth century—the inimitable preacher, evangelist, and churchman John C. Chapman. The study situates Chapman’s career within the secularizing Western cultures of the post-1960s—a period bringing momentous changes to the social and religious fabric of Western society. At the same time, global Evangelicalism was reviving, bringing vitality to large swathes in the Global South and a re-balancing in Western societies as conservative religious movements experienced growth and even renewal amidst wider secularizing trends. Against this backdrop the study explores the way in which, across a wide array of domestic and international fora, Chapman contended for the soteriological priority of the gospel in Christian life, mission, and thought. Accomplished via an absorbing blend of personal wit, impassioned oratory, innovative missiological strategy, and striking theological perception, the result was a stimulating history of public advocacy that sought a revival of confidence in Evangelicalism’s message, and a constantly reforming vision of Evangelicalism’s method. Such a legacy marks Chapman as a central figure within the generation of postwar leaders whose work has given Australian Evangelicalism its contemporary shape and dynamism.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A work of special value for beginners in the Christian life. "There is nothing more important in the Christian life than beginning right. If we begin right we can go on right. If we begin wrong the whole life that follows is likely to be wrong. If any one who reads these pages has begun wrong, it is a very simple matter to begin over again and begin right. What the right beginning in the Christian life is we are told in John 1: 12, "But as many as received Him, to them gave He power to become the sons of God, even to them that believe on His name." The right way to begin the Christian life is by receiving Jesus Christ. To any one who receives Him, He at once gives power to become a child of God. If the reader of this book should be the wickedest man on earth and should at this moment receive Jesus Christ, that very instant he would become a child of God. God says so in the most unqualified way in the verse quoted above. No one can become a child of God in any other way. No man, no matter how carefully he has been reared, no matter how well he has been sheltered from the vices and evils of this world, is a child of God until he receives Jesus Christ. We are "sons of God through faith in Christ Jesus" (Gal. 3: 26, R. V.), and in no other way." The best book we know to put into the hands of the young convert, and even in the hands of more mature Christians. It tells the young convert just what he needs to know. It will also be helpful to many who have long been Christians, but have not made that headway into the Christian life that they desire. "Many who have marked with gladness the large accession to the ranks of active Christians brought about by such revival agencies as those of Messrs. Torrey and Alexander have felt the importance of securing further instruction in the Christian life for those who have been brought to decision. Dr. Torrey himself is aware of this need and seeks to meet it in a little work entitled "How to Succeed in the Christian Life.' The suggestions are mainly in the direction of maintaining religion in the soul." -The Westminster "Intended by this well-known evangelist for young converts as a sort of guide in their new career. He hopes it may also be helpful to those who, though long on the road, have not made the progress they had hoped." -The Churchman "This book is especially written for those who are Mr. Torrey's converts. It is expected to be helpful to many other Christians also. The book bears, of course, evidences of the rugged individuality of Mr. Torrey, but his suggestions s to Bible studies are very practical and helpful. The book lays great emphasis on the privilege and duty of bringing friends and acquaintances to Christ." -The Christian Work and the Evangelist CONTENTS I. Beginning Right II. Lewis, Michael Gehring examines the evangelistic practices of one of the most significant lay evangelists of the twentieth century. In the early 1930s not many who knew Lewis would have guessed that he would become such a significant evangelist. He has left an evangelistic legacy that has influenced millions across the world. Yet Lewis scholarship has not given sufficient attention to this crucial aspect of his legacy. This work examines Lewis's loss and recovery of faith, and it shows how his experience heightened his own awareness of the loss of the Christian faith in England. Because of his ability to identify with others, Lewis engaged in the work of evangelism with uncanny skill. This work required singular courage on his part; it cost him dearly professionally and in his relationships. Gehring critically explores Lewis's motivations, practices, and legacy of evangelism. In doing so he provides penetrating insight for those interested in the theory and practice of evangelism in a culture that too readily leaves it to the crazies of the Christian tradition or relegates it to the margins of church life.

Book excerpt: Tuberculosis ran rampant in Japan during the late Meiji and Taisho years (1880s–1920s). Many of the victims of the then incurable disease were young female workers from the rural areas, who were trying to support their families by working in the new textile factories. The Japanese government of the time, however, seemed unprepared to tackle the epidemic. Elisheva A. Perelman argues that pragmatism and utilitarianism dominated the thinking of the administration, which saw little point in providing health services to a group of politically insignificant patients. This created a space for American evangelical organizations to offer their services. Perelman sees the relationship between the Japanese government and the evangelists as one of moral entrepreneurship on both sides. All the parties involved were trying to occupy the moral high ground. In the end, an uneasy but mutually beneficial arrangement was reached: the government accepted the evangelists’ assistance in providing relief to some tuberculosis patients, and the evangelists gained an opportunity to spread Christianity further in the country. Nonetheless, the patients remained a marginalized group as they possessed little agency over how they were treated. “Perelman captures the strategies that enabled Protestant missionaries to become a central force in treating tuberculosis and providing social services in prewar Japan. Acting as ‘moral entrepreneurs,’ the medical missionaries deftly raised funds abroad, gained support from the Japanese state, gained converts, and cultivated a corps of Japanese medical practitioners.” —Sheldon Garon, Princeton University; author of Molding Japanese Minds: The State in Everyday Life “Based on a wide range of primary and secondary sources, this groundbreaking book traces evangelical Christianity and the work of medical missions in late nineteenth- and early twentieth-century Japan. It is a must-read for anyone interested in the history of Christianity, disease, medicine, or public health in modern Japan.” —William Johnston, Wesleyan University; author of The Modern Epidemic: A History of Tuberculosis in Japan

Now the fundamentals of Christianity are laid out in an easy to follow collection of study sessions in Jane Harber's Walking Toward the Light. Using Biblical references, Jane answers many questions in clear and simple language that will appeal to new and old Christians alike. You will learn the basics of faith, such as: • Who Jesus Is • God's Love for You! • God's Power ... Grace Through Faith • Making It Real These crucial studies prove to be stimulating and revitalizing, and their life-changing principles will help stabilize Christian foundational beliefs. Begin your journey through the most profound experience of life, and start Walking Toward the Light. 'You have done some great work here. As an evangelist, I am always looking for good material to put into the hands of those who make a decision to follow Jesus. Some of the things we see are either too complicated or too biased. Some are great for young people but too juvenile for adults. Yours, however, is just like Baby Bear's portage., 'just right.' I'm sure this will be a very useable tool for people who want to help others move onward with the Lord. Thank you for this wonderful resource. Mike Warnke, Evangelist & Christian Comedian 'This work should not be confused with a denominational handbook. Jane has done a good job of keeping free from sectarian or theological bias. The book is Scripture study from start to finish. I am convinced that Walking Toward the Light will become a standard textbook for many churches to use in newcomers class, Sunday school, discipleship programs, or regular Bible study groups.' David Rodriguez, President Therapon Institute

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Matthew 24:14 English Standard Version (ESV) 14 And this gospel of the kingdom will be proclaimed throughout the whole world as a testimony to all nations, and then the end will come. Of course, Jesus would not have doubted his own words, because he had foreknowledge that they would be fulfilled in the whole world before the end came. Jesus would have known that, in time, an army of disciples would eventually respond to the leading of the Holy Spirit. (Ps. 110:3) What would this army of disciples do? They would effectively evangelize the whole world, from their community outward. While we do not know the day, nor the hour of Jesus' return (Mark 13:32), one sign of that return will be true Christianity entering the arena of the evangelism work, in a major way. While it has yet even to begin, what role can you play in getting it underway? The purpose of this series, The Christian Evangelist, is found within the subtitle, i.e., to go therefore and make disciples in our own community. The obligation of every Christian is to proclaim the Good News, teach Bible doctrine, and make disciples. Keep in mind that Jesus is coming at the day and hour that we do not know. He specifically asks, "When the Son of Man comes, will he find faith on earth?" Luke 18:8 While it is true that evangelists have written some books over the last 20 years, which recommend that we refocus our energy from the missionary field to our own local communities outward, it has been slow to take hold. The need to get onboard with this objective is imperative, yet many have been slow to respond, if at all. Hence, in view of the work that lies ahead, that of proclaiming the Good News, teaching, making disciples, let us make the best of the time that remains. We need a tool to help us along the way. The author of this series has penned a book for Christians and their congregation, which will enable them to begin an evangelism program. You can help by reading this book yourself, and then promoting it to your congregation. THE EVANGELISM HANDBOOK: How All Christians Can Effectively Share God's Word in Their Community, is a practical guide (for real life application) in aiding all Christians in sharing biblical beliefs, the Good News of the Kingdom, how to deal with Bible critics, overturning false beliefs, so as to make disciples, as commanded by Christ. (Matthew 28:19-20) After a Christian or a church has completed The Evangelism Handbook, this series, The Christian Evangelist is designed as evangelism food, to sustain continued growth.
