Book excerpt: The theme of the book of Revelation is derived from its opening sentence: “The Revelation of Jesus Christ.” John, the beloved disciple, is the recipient of this revelation; but Jesus Christ, the Alpha and the Omega, is its author. The major corpus of this letter to the seven churches of Asia Minor has Jesus Christ as its principal subject. Christ’s message to the seven churches of the Apocalypse (Revelation) transcends the barriers of time and space. Whatever criticisms and commendations were pronounced upon the churches of Asia Minor, the same are applicable to all churches which presently dispense similar attitudes and characteristics. The message of the Apocalypse, while couched in visions and symbols and numbers, is simply this: the final judgment of God will be pronounced upon Satan and sin, and his redeemed children will be victorious over the power and dominion of Satan. It is my hope that you will be challenged to read and study about the seven churches in the book of Revelation. Utilize the bibliography as a guide to additional resources on the subject.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Discovering what life was like for people in the first century churches became a passion for Susan Howell. Her research is focused on the first century lives: what were the "behind the scenes" things we don't know from casually reading the Bible? Focused on lessons from these churches, we ask how they apply to modern times. What can we do to avoid the trials and challenges of those in the first century? She questioned why the letters were written to those locations, which are in modern day Turkey, and not in Israel. As a man, Jesus never visited these churches, in fact, He never left Israel. Yet these churches open the book of Revelation, the final book in the Bible, given to John in a vision on the island of Patmos near the end of the first century. We know that Jesus was a great communicator. As He spoke to those who fish, He used fishing terms and to those who bake; baking terms. Susan wanted to know what Jesus was saying to the first century churches. What was happening in those towns, those churches? What did Jesus say to them in language and phrases they would understand? Susan has visited the excavated ruins of each of the seven churches in Turkey and studied each letter to the individual churches. She separated the letter verse by verse to learn what Jesus was saying. Her hope is that you, the reader, will discover what He is saying to them and in turn, to us. This will allow the reader the opportunity to spend quality time with Jesus.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Revelation was written by John who was one of the disciples of Jesus. Due to his faith as a Christian, he was banished by the Roman Emperor to Patmos Island. Jesus came to him in a vision and gave him messages to be given to the seven churches. These messages highlight the secret on-goings among the Christians in those churches. These secrets and other accounts in the book, aptly describe the name of the book – as “Revelation” (apokalypsis). This means, to expose in full view what was formerly hidden or veiled. The seven churches which were recipients of the messages from Jesus were; Ephesus, Smyrna, Pergamum, Thyatira, Sardis, Philadelphia and Laodicea. The common theme that runs through the messages to these seven churches was their suffering in the face of persecution. During this time, Emperor worship was at its height in all places under Roman authority. Anyone who refused to pay homage to Caesar by burning a pinch of incense and say, “Caesar is Lord” was persecuted. Apart from the Emperor worship, some of the churches were also involved in idol worship, an abomination before God. For example, Ephesus was the centre for the worship of the fertility goddess known in Greek as “Artemis.” In the Pergamum church, Jesus vehemently denied the teachings of Baalam and the Nicolaitans – false teachings that had taken root within the church. Israel was lured into immorality and paganism when they drifted from God and worshipped Baal (Numbers 25:1-3). In the Thyatira church, the Christians had tolerated the woman Jezebel, who called herself a prophet. By her teachings, she misled them into sexual immorality and the eating of food sacrificed to idols. Jesus rebuked the seven churches for tolerating false teachers and other abominable sins. He therefore asked the Christians to repent of their evil ways and come back to God. He also encouraged them to persevere in serving God, knowing that if they continued to be faithful, they will be rewarded with crowns. He also promised them of His continuous protection and care in their struggles. In conclusion, Jesus told the seven churches the following two important things: a) “To him who overcomes, I will grant to sit with Me on My throne, as I also overcame and sat with My Father on His throne” (Revelation 3:21 NIV). b) Whoever has ears, let them hear what the Spirit says to the churches. To the one who is victorious, I will give the right to eat from the tree of life, which is in the paradise of God (Revelation 2:7 NIV)."--

This book was released on 2021-02-09 with total page 472 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: While in exile on the Island of Patmos, the Apostle John received this instruction from Jesus: "Write what you see into a book. Send it to the seven churches: Ephesus, Smyrna, Pergamum, Thyatira, Sardis, Philadelphia and Laodicea" (Revelation 1:11; The Message Bible). Jesus then proceeds to dictate to the apostle personal messages to each of the seven churches. The content of these messages does not contain the opinions, or instructions of a pastor, deacon, elder or governing church council. These messages were sent directly from Jesus and reveal his assessment of each church. This in itself should be sufficient reason for taking the time and exerting the energy to do an exhaustive study of the seven churches. But there are additional reasons as well which are dealt with extensively in this book. The messages reveal what is acceptable and unacceptable to Jesus in the life of a church. They also reflect seven periods of church history. In addition, the messages explain a Christian's relationship to the group of believers with which they are associated. Furthermore, they stress the responsibility of every Christian to protect the spiritual welfare of the local church. Finally, these messages provide the proper perspective of what Jesus values most in a church. At the end of each message Jesus makes this statement: "Anyone with ears to hear must listen to the Spirit and understand what he is saying to the churches!" (Revelation 2:7; New Living Translation). The messages to the seven churches of the Apocalypse are as relevant today as they were when John received them. They are intended for anyone who has ears to hear what the Spirit says to the churches.

It's as relevant to us today as it was in John's day. In Revelation 1:3, Jesus says to keep the things which are written in it.Ask yourself, "What do you know about what Jesus Christ wants for you to do?" You may say, "I believe, I ask forgiveness of my sins, go to church, and that's it." Then you need to take a journey to discover what Jesus wants from us.It's easy to skim through a passage and say, "I got it," Just as I became engaged in researching and studying God's word. Hopefully, this results in a greater understanding of the passage. The key is the Bible itself; the Old and New Testaments are treasure troves of supporting verses. You will find the true meaning that God and Jesus Christ are telling you.In Matthew 7:7, "Ask and it will be given to you; seek and you will find; knock and the door will be opened to you." I hope and pray that you will find this book helpful as you read through it and discover the true treasure.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Revelation may be the most difficult of the New Testament letters to clearly understand. John draws word pictures that challenge our understanding and our imaginations. Perhaps no group of passages has had a wider range of interpretive meanings. These messages thundering from the gates of heaven indicate that these letters to seven ancient churches have relevance infinitely beyond the circle of the original recipients. They are a composite word to the church universal throughout time. The letters to the seven churches are not exempt from these varied historic, preterist (everything has already happened) futurist (not much has already happened), or idealist \ spiritual interpretations and blending of these views. John writes to churches about things that must soon take place. In the churches things are already happening - churches that face trials, temptations, quarreling and social unrest in the cultures around them as their Jewish neighbors and civic authorities place pressures on the members, resulting in a loss of fidelity to Christian doctrine and the call to holy living. John presents us with the challenges of the Christian life. Answers to the question, "How then should we live?" among our cultural surroundings become clearer as we read through the words to the churches. John becomes the kind of friend who stands alongside us and loves us enough to tell us when we have lost our Christian walk. His advice is clear and to the point. There is no mistaking the call to remembrance and repentance.Ephesus - where is your love?Smyrna - I know your tribulationPergamum - Satan's throne is where you liveThyatira - you have a leadership problemSardis - You are dead Philadelphia - I will give you strengthLaodicea - pride is your problemWe can see something of ourselves as we hear Christ speak to His body. Will we have the "ears to hear what the Spirit says the churches?"

Book excerpt: In a day when evil men and impostors go on from bad to worse, deceiving and being deceived (II Timothy 3:13), GOD's people should be moved to a deeper consecration and reverence in their daily conduct (II Peter 3:11). The more wicked the hour, the holier should be the aspirations and conduct of the Christian. Many years ago an old Puritan preacher wrote: "To keep in a spirit of holiness in an adulterous generation is a Christian honor." Such is the call of GOD in these troublous times. The letters to the seven churches of Asia Minor take on new force as we listen to the Son of Man speaking through them to the church of the present day. The fact that what our Lord said comprises nearly one-eighth of the Book of the Revelation serves to emphasize the importance GOD places on these encouragements and warnings. The materials appearing in these chapters were gathered from messages given over the special network of the Back to the Bible Broadcast. - John I. Paton Literature Editor

Some of it is prophecy, and too many concentrate on those chapters and fail to see the importance of the messages to the churches. Although these were to the seven churches of that time, the meessages like all of God's word are timeless, they are aa appropriate today. This book takes those chapters, brings in other scriptures that will help the reader understand them and ties in practical events an situations in churches. It is theology, yes, but practical theology, that which is valuable for today.
