Book excerpt: In this study, Michael Hundley explores the diverse deities of ancient Near Eastern and biblical literature, from deified doors and diseases to the masters of the universe. Using data from Mesopotamia, Hittite Anatolia, Egypt, the Levant, and non-priestly Genesis and Exodus, Hundley explains their context-specific approach to deity, which produces complex and seemingly contradictory portraits. He suggests that ancient deities gained prominence primarily by co-opting the attributes of other deities, rather than by denying their existence or inventing new powers. He demonstrates that the primary difference between biblical and ancient Near Eastern presentations lies in their rhetorical goals, not their conceptions of gods. While others promote divine supremacy, Genesis and Exodus promote exclusive worship. Hundley argues that this monolatry redefined the biblical divine sphere and paved the way for the later development of monotheism and monotheistic explanations of evil.

All religions address concerns with death from the handling of human remains, to defining death, to suggesting what happens after life. The Routledge Companion to Death and Dying provides readers with an overview of the study of death and dying. Questions of death, mortality, and more recently of end-of-life care, have long been important ones and scholars from a range of fields have approached the topic in a number of ways. Comprising over fifty-two chapters from a team of international contributors, the companion covers: funerary and mourning practices; concepts of the afterlife; psychical issues associated with death and dying; clinical and ethical issues; philosophical issues; death and dying as represented in popular culture. This comprehensive collection of essays will bring together perspectives from fields as diverse as history, philosophy, literature, psychology, archaeology and religious studies, while including various religious traditions, including established religions like Christianity, Judaism, Islam, Hinduism, and Buddhism as well as new or less widely known traditions such as the Spiritualist Movement, the Church of Latter Day Saints, and Raëlianism. The Routledge Companion to Death and Dying is essential reading for students and researchers in religious studies, philosophy and literature.

Book excerpt: This book is a temporary Volume IV in a four-volume set on Messianic Judaism by scholar Daniel Perek. It is an English translation of the Aramaic Peshitta New Testament, and will soon be accompanied by a Hebrew translation of the same. The goal of this New Testament is to put the Aramaic Peshitta text back into its cultural context as much as possible linguistically, by transliterating Hebrew names and other words, and looking more closely at the translation of certain words and concepts. It is the author’s contention that the Aramaic texts preceded the Greek NT texts, and that this version will help readers see some of the reasons why. Namely, the use of the Name, ???? , or ???? in the Aramaic, would not be so strategically used in an Aramaic translation from the Greek as it is in the Aramaic Peshitta texts, so one can easily see the Name as it was used by Yeshua and His Talmidim (Disciples). Further, the Name “Yeshua,” ????, the given, human name of the Messiah, is affirmed as Yeshua in the Aramaic Peshitta texts, and is seen readily within this volume. The Hebrew translation will be completed shortly, offering the same and more to the Hebrew reader.

This is a study of the twelve most common Hebrew names for God-and their significance and fulfillment in Christ. God's names reveal not only different dimensions of His character but also point to their fulfillment in the Person and work of Jesus Christ. This classic study examines the Old Testament names of God and the particular aspect of His character and dealings with man that each reveals. Names of God is a book that will help contemporary Christians better understand the glory, majesty, and power of God. (More than 115,000 in print)

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: At a fascinating moment in French intellectual history, an interest in matters occult was not equivalent to a rejection of scientific thought; participants in séances and magic rituals were seekers after experimental data as well as spiritual truth. A young astronomy student wrote of his quest: "I am not in the presence or under the influence of any evil spirit: I study Spiritism as I study mathematics." He did not see himself as an ecstatic visionary but rather as a sober observer. For him, the darkened room of occult practice was as much laboratory as church. In an evocative history of alternative religious practices in France in the second half of the nineteenth and beginning of the twentieth centuries, John Warne Monroe tells the interconnected stories of three movements--Mesmerism, Spiritism, and Occultism. Adherents of these groups, Monroe reveals, attempted to "modernize" faith by providing empirical support for metaphysical concepts. Instead of trusting theological speculation about the nature of the soul, these believers attempted to gather tangible evidence through Mesmeric experiments, séances, and ceremonial magic. While few French people were active Mesmerists, Spiritists, or Occultists, large segments of the educated general public were familiar with these movements and often regarded them as fascinating expressions of the "modern condition," a notable contrast to the Catholicism and secular materialism that prevailed in their culture. Featuring eerie spirit photographs, amusing Daumier lithographs, and a posthumous autograph from Voltaire, as well as extensive documentary evidence, Laboratories of Faith gives readers a sense of what being in a séance or a secret-society ritual might actually have felt like and why these feelings attracted participants. While they never achieved the transformation of human consciousness for which they strove, these thinkers and believers nevertheless pioneered a way of "being religious" that has become an enduring part of the Western cultural vocabulary.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Bible is composed of 66 books penned by 40+ people over 2,000 years. Since the Bible was penned by these people over several thousands of years, some skeptics cast suspicions that it was not integrated or true. The Bible can be proven, it is integrated and literal and authored by someone outside of our time domain. Every letter and every number was dictated by deliberate design of Elohim (God). Prophecies are not to scare you or anyone else. They are to prepare the Believer for events when they occur. To be a Christian should be a challenge. If you are not being persecuted, you are not walking closely with Yeshua (Jesus). We are told YHVH does not give us the Spirit of Fear in 2 Tim 1:7. Yeshua tells us in Luke 21:12, that before the start of the last 7 years, Daniel's 70th week or as commonly know as the Tribulation, Christians will be persecuted. Do not fear persecution, expect persecution if you are being righteous in YHVH's eyes.
