Patrick, Chief of Air Service, American Expeditionary Forces, directed that a record be made of lessons learned during the war. This information, he believed, was needed for planning the Air Service of the future. The reports prepared by commanders, pilots, observers, and other members of the various Air Service units in response to General Patrick's directive are of considerable historical interest for the information they contain about the Air Service and its employment at the front. A select group of the reports on lessons learned make up Part 1 of this volume of World War I documents on U.S. military aviation. Part II is devoted to a report on the effects of Allied bombing in World War I. This long-forgotten document, the result of a post-war investigation by the Air Intelligence Section of General Headquarters, American Expeditionary Forces, is the counterpart of the well-known United States Strategic Bombing Survey of World War II.

Driven by a total force policy and the robust defense budgets of the 1980s, the ANG had developed into a true force in reserve that demonstrated a high degree of professionalism. Contents: introduction (ANG aviators have participated in wars and contingencies since 1916); "leaning forward" (the ANG pushed to be Ôin the hunt' during the PGC); "redefining the ANG" (volunteerism is emphasized and tailored forces are packaged); "validating the total force" (ANG members performed well during the PGC). Book excerpt: The New York Times–bestselling author “refreshingly re-tells, and corrects, the story of Frank Luke’s life and amazing aerial exploits” (War Bird Ace author Jack Stokes Ballard). Frank Luke Jr. was an unlikely pilot. In the Great War, when fliers were still “knights of the air,” Luke was an ungallant loner—a kid from Arizona who collected tarantulas, shot buzzards, and boxed miners. But during two torrid weeks in September 1918, he was the deadliest man on the Western Front. In only ten missions, he destroyed fourteen heavily defended German balloons and four airplanes, the second highest American tally in the entire war. Author Blaine Pardoe retraces and refreshes Frank Luke’s story through recently discovered correspondence. Frantic, short, and splendid, the life of Frank Luke Jr. dramatizes the tragic intervention of an American spirit in the war that devastated Europe. “A brisk, nuts-and-bolts description of air warfare in the murderously flimsy flying machines of 1918.” —Kirkus Reviews “This painstaking biography of World War I ace Frank Luke will earn Pardoe kudos . . . Thorough annotation makes the book that much more valuable to WWI aviation scholars as well as for more casual air-combat buffs.” —Booklist

This book was released on 2015-11-06 with total page 261 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study measures wartime claims against actual results of the British bombing campaign against Germany in the Great War. Components of the Royal Naval Air Service (RNAS), the Royal Flying Corps (RFC), and the Royal Air Force (RAF) conducted bombing raids between July 1916 and the Armistice. Specifically, Number 3 Wing (RNAS), 41 Wing of Eighth Brigade (RFC), and the Independent Force (IF) bombed German targets from bases in France. Lessons supposedly gleaned from these campaigns heavily influenced British military aviation, underpinning RAF doctrine up to and into the Second World War. Fundamental discrepancies exist, however, between the official verdict and the first-hand evidence of bombing results gathered by intelligence teams of the RAF and the US Air Service. Results of the British bombing efforts were demonstrably more modest, and costs in casualties and wastage far steeper, than previously acknowledged. A preoccupation with “moral effect” came to dominate the British view of their aerial offensives. Maj Gen Hugh M. Trenchard played a pivotal role in bringing this misperception to the forefront of public consciousness. After the Armistice, the potential of strategic bombing was officially extolled to justify the RAF as an independent service. The Air Ministry’s final report must be evaluated as a partisan manifestation of this crusade and not as a definitive final assessment, as it has been mistakenly accepted previously. This study develops and substantiates a comprehensive evaluation of British long-range bombing in the First World War. Its findings run directly counter to the generally held opinion. Natural limitations, technical shortfalls, and aircrews lacking proficiency acted in concert with German defenses to produce far less results than those claimed.
