Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this 1999 book, Michael Wheeler challenges critical orthodoxy by arguing that John Ruskin's writing is underpinned by a sustained trust in divine wisdom: a trust nurtured by his imaginative engagement with King Solomon and the temple in Jerusalem, and with the wisdom literature of the Old Testament. In Modern Painters, The Seven Lamps of Architecture and The Stones of Venice, belief in the wisdom of God the Father informed Ruskin's Evangelical natural theology and his celebration of Turner's landscape painting, while the wisdom of God the Son lay at the heart of his Christian aesthetics. Whereas 'the author of Modern Painters' sought to teach his readers how to see architecture, paintings and landscapes, the 'Victorian Solomon' whose religious life was troubled, and who created various forms of modern wisdom literature in works such as Unto this Last, The Queen of the Air and Fors Clavigera, wished to teach them how to live.

Book excerpt: Lift up your voice with strength, seek the Lord and His strength, and seek His presence continually. Give thanks to the Lord, call upon His name, make known His deeds among the people, and proclaim that is name alone is exalted. The Lord is the everlasting God, the creator of the ends of the earth. Before Him no god was formed, nor shall there be any after Him. He is the Lord besides Him there is no savior. He is He who blots out our transgressions for His own sake and He will not remember our sins. He satisfies the longing soul, and the hungry soul He fills with good things. He makes His sun rise on the evil and on the good, and sends rain on the just and on the unjust. He rebuked the red sea and it became dry, He turns rivers into a desert, He turns desert into a pool of water, a parched land into spring of water. He provides food for those who fear Him, He heals the brokenhearted and binds up their wounds, wealth and riches are in His house. The Lord is gracious and merciful; slow to anger and abounding in steadfast love. The Lord is good to all, and His mercy is over all that he has made, His understanding is beyond measure. He made the earth and created man on it, it was His hands that stretched out the heavens and He commanded all their host. He determines the number of stars; He gives to all of them their names. He covers the heavens with clouds; He prepares rain for the earth; He makes grass grow on the hills. He gives to the beasts their food, His delight is not in the strength of the horse nor His pleasure in the legs of man, but the LORD takes pleasure in those who fear Him, in those who hope in His steadfast love. Praise the Lord for who He is, Praise the Lord for His mighty deeds, praise Him according to His excellent greatness, praise Him in His sanctuary; praise Him in His mighty heavens. Let everything that has breath praise the LORD! Praise the LORD! Amen Prophet Joseph Patrick Oyone Meye Scribe of Christ

Book excerpt: 'Sicily Herald and the Blazon of Colours' brings together the original texts with original English translations of two closely related primary sources on Renaissance colour symbolism. 'Le Blason de toutes armes et scutz' (The blazon of all arms and shields) was completed about 1420 by Jean Courtois (c. 1375-1436), the Sicily Herald, and printed in Paris in 1495. The second, 'Le Blason des couleurs en armes, livr es, et devises' (The blazon of colours in arms, liveries and devices), by Gilles Corrozet (1510-68), was published in Paris in 1527 by Pierre Le Brodeur. They were first two books on colour to be printed in Europe, and are now available in English for the first time in five centuries. Roy Osborne is an artist, educator and historian, and author of books on colour. He was awarded the Turner Medal of the Colour Group (Great Britain) in 2003, and the Colour in Art, Design and Environment Medal of the International Colour Association in 2019.

This book was released on 2021-06-07 with total page 205 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The wellspring of Thomas Hardy and Religion is the recognition that Thomas Hardy's two late great novels, Tess of the d'Urbervilles and Jude the Obscure, are dominated, respectively, by two religious traditions of nineteenth-century Anglicanism: Evangelicalism and Anglo-Catholicism. Placing those movements in their historical context alongside other Victorian religious traditions, the author explores the development of Hardy's religious beliefs and ideas up till the 1880s. Evangelicalism in Tess is discussed through an analysis of the principal characters, Angel Clare and his father, Parson Clare, Alec d'Urberville and Tess herself, leading to a consideration of why this form of Christianity looms so large in that novel. Not unexpectedly, the reasons for this are linked to Hardy's personal and intellectual biography, especially his religious upbringing and experience of and involvement in these religious traditions. This applies to both novels. The sources of Jude the Obscure in Hardy's life and thought, and their links to Anglo-Catholicism, are revealed in the context of the influence of that tradition on the narrative and characters, in particular Jude's sense of vocation, the importance of the university town of Christminster and issues associated with marriage, divorce and sexuality. Throughout his analysis of both novels the author demonstrates how Hardy lambasts the way in which these religious traditions and the conventional Victorian morality they bolstered undermine human flourishing. Thomas Hardy and Religion concludes by considering the place these two novels have in the continuing trajectory of Hardy's theological ideas, underlining the critical importance of understanding his religious concerns and reflecting on the way in which his critique of religion is important to people of faith.

It's about the intriguing revelation of the Body of Christ as the virtuous woman of this chapter. It is about the LORD who loves us and provides for us, equips us and enables us to be all that we can be as His witnesses in every situation to the praise of His glory. This book is a must-read for everyone from the non-Christian who will benefit from its principles and the Gospel message to the servant-leader who at the end of time wants to hear the Lord say, "Well done, my good and faithful servant! Enter thou into the joy of thy Lord." Horton is a spiritual compilation. The book of Proverbs belongs to a group of works in Hebrew literature the subject of which is Wisdom. It is probably the earliest of them all and may be regarded as the stem, of which they are the branches. Without attempting to determine the relative ages of these compositions, the ordinary reader can see the points of contact between Proverbs and Ecclesiastes, and a little careful study reveals that the book of Job, though fuller and richer in every respect, belongs to the same order.

This book was released on 2004-03-17 with total page 990 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: C.F. Keil was a scholar strongly committed to confessional theology. His dogmatic-confessional approach is particularly evident in his approach to the Pentateuch. He strongly supported Mosaic authorship of the Pentateuch and rejected attempts to explain extraordinary events in the history of Israel as anything but miraculous, divine intervention. Keil showed much interest in the historical development of divine revelation. Viewing the prophets as persons who were able to perceive future trajectories of God's saving acts, he presented history and revelation as interdependent rather than fundamentally dissimilar. Prophetic predictions then find their fulfillment in the historical person of Christ. This introduction to the Old Testament reveals Keil's foundational presuppositions - presuppositions which shaped his contribution to the well-known and influential Keil-Delitzsch 'Biblical Commentary', which includes Keil's commentaries on all the books from Genesis to Esther, Jeremiah, Ezekiel, Daniel, and the Minor Prophets.
